CAT’S MEOW
The initial ask was straightforward: brighten the kitchen and modernize the exterior. But as we stepped in, it became clear this needed reinvention. We set out to open things up, bring in light, and allow the clients’ art, furniture, and way of living to guide the design.
At the front entry, imposing brick walls were removed to create a more welcoming arrival. A new glass entry door, staggered bluestone pavers, and soft, layered landscaping, complete with a relocated Japanese maple, now lead visitors gently to the threshold. Outside, fresh paint compliments the existing brick, while updated sconces and new house numbers finish the moment.
Inside, we let go of unnecessary barriers, reducing trim and accents. Walls between the dining room and entry were removed to ease the flow, and cased openings gave way to clean ceiling transitions made to hold art. The dining room’s original classic modern table and chairs remained, now weighted with new upholstered host chairs and lit with art-focused fixtures. From the exterior, a striking pendant draws the eye inward.
The living room ceiling was vaulted, and within the volume we carved out two distinct zones: a conversation area near the fireplace and a sculptural bar space. Curved cabinets echo those found in the kitchen, and welcoming seating arrangements make both areas feel equal parts social and still.
The kitchen stayed within its original footprint, but nearly every surface was reconsidered. We introduced modern appliances, efficient storage, and a streamlined island with recessed ventilation. A larger window frames the pool view, while a built-in desk, linear pulls, and an integrated refrigerator lend a composed feel to the room’s utility.
The television area was reimagined. Not stripped back, but rebalanced. What was once a space of dated shelving and cluttered display now feels edited and intentional. A custom divider doubles as an art display and connects the room visually to the living spaces beyond. The artworks remain, now showcased with a sense of ease and quiet sophistication.
Art lights were placed with precision, highlighting pieces collected over decades. From the first step inside, framed views and considered vignettes create rhythm and quiet delight.
Outdoors, the previous engineered deck had collapsed. In its place, we introduced a new patio layout with large-format pavers, and a fenced-in zone that better connects the driveway, home, and garage. A custom bar, grill, and countertop now support entertaining, while added exterior storage brings function to the flow. Kissinger Landscaping brought structure and softness through planting, pathways, and form.
With a lifelong collection of art and iconic furniture as a foundation, the home now feels more expansive and composed. Each change was considered, building toward a quieter, more connected whole, still deeply personal, and very much theirs.
