This year, we’re exploring a new series, Inside the Timeline. You can revisit our first step, Before the Beginning, here.

In schematic design, we take everything we learned in the discovery phases and start shaping it into early concepts. Loose floor plans, layout options, and a sense of how the space wants to move. This is also when the palette begins to emerge: the foundational materials, tones, and textures that anchor the feel of the home. Through sketches and mood boards, the mood and intention surface, giving you the first true glimpse of how the space will live. It’s the gentle, exciting beginning of a shared vision.
At the Poolside Cool project, the first layout studies in the kitchen established the heartbeat of the home. As we explored different configurations, the circulation, sight lines, and opportunities for gathering came into focus. These early sketches also became a springboard for materiality, giving us a framework to imagine how texture and tone could bring the whole concept to life.
Check back next month to discover the next phase, Design in Full Bloom.
