The owners of this Prairie Village home came to us with a desire to restore their mid-century Drummond to its original appeal. Drummond’s vision was at the forefront of the new design as material selections reflect timeless and true mid-century style.
In the main living area, gorgeous architectural elements shine again. We restored the signature vaulted ceiling. A new, continuous hearth honors the mid-century aesthetic and connects the living area to the dining space, anchoring the room and adding seating. Layers of sheetrock were removed to reveal the original brick fireplace, which was painted for fresh appeal.
A new tall window adjacent to the fireplace and a peeled back kitchen wall brings natural light into the kitchen. Custom walnut cabinetry balances the dark ceiling and warm flooring. Thoughtful details such as a coffee bar, refrigerator drawers, and small appliance storage bring conveniences of modern life within reach, while tucked away. A pocket door opens to the adjacent studio space. Cork flooring in the main living spaces and custom terrazzo tile in the bathrooms and utility spaces.
The bedroom layout was reworked to create a more user-friendly primary suite. The primary bath’s terrazzo extends from the toilet wall, onto the floor and seamlessly wraps around the shower, making the room feel clean and large. The brightly colored vanity is playful and modern. Each choice emphasizes light, detail, and of course, function.
The airy, neutral palette is sophisticated but comfortable. Varying textures of wood and fabric add interest at every turn. When every detail is approached with intention, midcentury style is timeless, livable and modern.
